Summary: A possession is what makes Sam talk
The first time Dean gets possessed it turns into one of Sam’s most horrible nightmares. Literally. Because Sam is dreaming it. It comes so out of the blue that Sam doesn’t wake up for a whole day. He is so deeply inside his head that he doesn’t find a way out for a while.
It freaks Dean out so much that he takes Sam to Bobby, away from the road, away from the hunt. He submerges in books and websites, wants to find out what the hell is up with Sam now. Sam lets him because he is too shell shocked to be actively trying to help.
Sam becomes quiet. Withdrawn. He can see Dean and Bobby worrying but can’t really do anything to reassure them. He doesn’t know how to. He doesn’t know how to deal with the things he saw; with the way Dean wasn’t Dean anymore. It’s not so much that fact that Dean got possessed but the fact that Sam suddenly remembers what it was like and that he never wants Dean to experience it.
He can’t talk about it either. He just told Dean it was a dream he can’t forget, a dream that was draining him even way beyond its reach. Sam hates lying to Dean again, hates that he tells his brother he can’t remember anything.
Bobby is the one who gets him to talk though. And it’s the most mundane thing that cracks Sam open. Bobby is cooking spaghetti’s chattering away about how Dean is working on the car and how he himself found new drawings to keep demons out. Sam just starts talking and doesn’t realise Bobby has been silent for quiet some time. Sam just talks.
When he is done he looks at Bobby and sees Dean standing next to him. Sam doesn’t even care anymore if Dean knows or not, he is just relieved that it is all out. Dean’s face is pale, drawn tight and for a moment Sam thinks Dean will yell or deny or say something to reprimand Sam for keeping quiet that long.
But all Dean does is move forward and wrap Sam in a hug he hasn’t been subjected to in years. And right in this moment Sam realises that he misses this. That he misses this so much that he buries closer to into Dean and doesn’t let go for a long time.
Sam comes to when sobs wreck his body and Dean is whispering soothing words into his hair. They are on the floor of Bobby’s kitchen, Bobby nowhere to be seen, and Sam doesn’t remember crumbling down. Because he has to have been crumbling the way Dean is holding him and the way Sam is clinging to him.
“Sshhh.. It’s okay. Sammy, it’s alright. It won’t happen. We are safe. Hidden.”
“I couldn’t help you. No powers. You died. Couldn’t help myself.”
“I know. Sam. It was just a dream. Not a premonition. A dream.”
Sam nods against Dean’s chest. He wants to believe Dean. Desperately so. He doesn’t want to think about it anymore, doesn’t want to analyse it until his mind is so numb and overworked that he loses time.
“I hate possessions.”
“I know.”
Dean just holds him, doesn’t move, and doesn’t struggle. Just holds him.
“The dream took you down because you have been on the edge for a while Sammy. I am sorry I let it come this far.”
Sam doesn’t really what to say to that because he isn’t sure that Dean is right and sure as hell doesn’t want Dean to blame himself for something that is solely Sam’s doing. Not again. Dean has been doing that all his life and Sam thinks it’s enough now.
“It’s okay Sam. I know it’s not my fault. I just wish I could have helped you before it took you down like this.”
That Sam actually gets. He snuggles closer, and will for the rest of his life refuse to admit that he did in fact snuggle up to his big brother. He is calm now, not as numb as before and he doesn’t want to move.
Neither does Dean as it seems.
They are still sitting on the kitchen floor when Bobby comes back in. Bobby just looks at them but doesn’t say a word. He starts to work around them and after a while Sam smells the newly mixed sauce for the spaghettis he totally forgot about. And he is hungry.
They only move when the table is set and Bobby grumbles about the food getting cold. Dean doesn’t stop touching Sam though and Sam is grateful for it. He needs this kind of anchor right now.
Dean is his anchor.

Theme: 03 Paranormal
Prompt(s): 08 Sacrifice
Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: Characters belong to Kripke and Warner. I don't own anything.
Warnings: Might be spoilery up until 5.05
Summary: Sacrifices tell the story of the Winchester's lives
Sacrifices are like a red line being drawn through his life. Sacrifices are a major theme of his life, his and his families’. Recently mostly his and Dean’s lives since Dad sacrificed the last thing he had to safe them. His own life.
Sam sees it like a repeated pattern from which they can’t get away. Dean tends to agree.
There is Sam’s inconsistent and very unstable childhood. He sacrificed a lot even as a child. The thing he is he never thought about it as sacrifices. It was his life and he didn’t know anything else. Or he knew but thought he’d never fit in anyway the way he was brought up.
Sam never really thinks about his college days. He thinks he didn’t sacrifice all that much then. Until the end. And not considering that he left the most important thing behind, the one relationship that ever meant anything to him. So he doesn’t think about it.
He almost sacrificed his soul, his sanity, his humanity. And all because he thought he was doing the right thing. And all the little things he left behind, sacrificed for the life he was living, they all pile up and make one mountain Sam isn’t ready to climb or conquer.
And then he thinks of all the things Dean sacrificed for this life, for Sam. Sam thinks no one can ever equate all the things they did for each other and say one sacrificed more than the other.
Secretly Sam thinks Dean has the ultimate thing to hold over Sam but they both know they’ll never use it.
So their lives are made up and plastered with sacrifices and Sam doubts it will ever stop being like this. Sam thinks they have learned but that doesn’t mean they will stop acting the way they always have.
Sacrifices are what keeps them going, keeps them alive sometimes even. No regrets, not when it comes to his brother’s life.

Warnings: Might be spoilery up until 5.05
Summary: Faith is what is always there for Sam.
Sam has had faith since he could remember. He has had faith in different things. Believed in different things. Faith was and still is like something liquid, moving and changing but still the same. It could morph into something that would suit Sam’s current life, something that would help him get through the day, the month, the year.
Faith was always there. Faith in the good in people, faith in the knowledge that there is something there watching over them, faith in the abilities of his father (which changed during the years into a confidence that John was well trained), faith in his own abilities (which changed over the years as well).
There, of course, was his faith in God. That was a constant thing.
Another constant thing was his faith in Dean. He had faith in the fact that Dean would always be there, that Dean would always do everything to help Sam if Sam asked, that Dean would always be a constant in his life, one way or another. And so far his faith hasn’t been proven wrong.
Sam has always had a strong faith in things. The faith in Dean was and is among the strongest.

Summary: There are myths that stay myths, then there are things that feel too real to by myth
Sam would say the image of his mother he has in his head is like a myth. He never really got to know her, doesn’t really know how she really was. Dean never spoke much of her, only when Sam was little and begged for some stories. Dad never said anything at all.
The image he is his head is a mixture of Dean’s stories, the pictures they still have and Sam’s own fantasies. He has always been pretty sure that this image is very far from reality but he never really cared. It’s the only image of his mother he has.
Of course he used to watch kids in every school he had to go to. Watched them and their parents, watched them and their siblings. He compared and still never saw anything wrong with the way his family lived. At least not until he wanted something different.
There have always been different kinds of families and Sam thought his was just one of those. It took him a good while after he entered school life that things in his family were really, really different. He learned how not to draw attention to himself and the way he was living. He learned not to tell people too much about himself or his family.
A normal life, a normal family has always been something Sam only looked upon from the sidelines. He saw it from the outside and never really felt like there was a way in for him. Even when he was with Jessica he still didn’t really think it was all that normal. Of course, he never thought he’d be proven right.
Normalcy was a myth. A stable family was a myth. A family bigger than his brother and him is a myth. The image of a father that Sam knew existed but never really saw again once he started to rebel was a myth. His mother was and still is a myth to Sam.
But Mary’s love for her family, for her son’s, for her husband wasn’t a myth. John’s love for his son’s wasn’t. Dean’s love for Sam isn’t. Sam’s love for his father and for Dean wasn’t and isn’t. Sam thinks that’s the only thing that counts in his life, that the love he feels, the love he receives aren’t myths.

Theme: 03 Paranormal
Prompt(s): 12 Bones
Rating: PG-13

Warnings: Might be spoilery up until 5.05
Summary: It is just the usual hunt, that's what Sam thinks
Dean finds the bones when they are about to give up. They have been up in the mountains for days now, trying to find traces of the ghoul and a way to kill it as well. Sam has been buried in the books for the last few days. He had to carry them along since wi-fi is an impossibility out in the wild. Sam is missing the warmth of their motel room and the comfort of the internet where he can look up things without having to leave through 5 books to cross reference.
Dean has been pissy for a while now and Sam had kept to himself. It took him two days to actually find out that they were looking for bones. They have been digging since then. Sam is wet, tired, hungry and a little annoyed at Dean’s constant cursing. Sam is tempted to tell him to shut up and to just give up in it for today.
He is sitting on a cold stone trying to find the passage again he had been reading before Dean had started to grumble huff when Dean shouts out in triumph. Dean is holding a longish bone in his hands. A bone carved with runes and symbols and Sam knows it is the right one without actually having to take a closer view. He just knows it.
And then he is proven right when the thing starts to glow blue and Dean yelps. Sam doesn’t really care for the bone, he knows what it does and he sort of regrets not having told Dean so. But then the bone needs someone unsuspecting, unknowing to unfurl all its powers. Sam just hopes Dean won’t kill him for it later.
Sam stands by, watches Dean and the bone, doesn’t watch anything else but keeps his knife ready. It only takes a moment, the bone glows even stronger and Dean is frozen to the spot, holds on to the bone though for which Sam is really grateful. Letting it drop would take away all the chances they have at catching the ghoul. So it glows, surrounds Dean and Sam and draws the ghoul close. Sam is as frozen as Dean is when the light reaches him and engulfs him fully. He feels a little like he is under water, a little sluggish. It’s hard to move but he has his eyes fixed on the ghoul. Only on the ghoul.
When it enters the circle Sam had laid out it is close enough to get caught in the blue light as well. It doesn’t move, doesn’t even make any sounds. Sam has to pull all his strength together to move forward, to move his arm and to finally kill it with the knife clutched in his hand.
The second it drops dead to the floor the blue light is gone and both Sam and Dean are on their knees. Dean glares but doesn’t say a word. They pack together, burn the remains of the ghoul and track it back to the car.
Sam is actually a little afraid of what Dean will do when they are back in the motel. He can’t read Dean as easily as he used to anymore, so he is sort of helpless as what to expect from his brother.
The second the door closes behind them Sam is slammed up against the wall, a strong arm under his chin and a knee between his thighs. It shouldn’t be as hot as it feels to Sam.
“Don’t you ever fucking do something like this again. You had no idea what it would do and you still let us run into it. Fuck Sam…”
“I am sorry. I.. was pretty sure it would work out. It wasn’t so dangerous. I just wanted… I mean.. I wanted kill it and keep you out of it. And holding the bone was the lesser danger. They need you Dean.. to fight.”
Dean sighs. Drops his arm and then his head on Sam’s shoulder.
“Sammy. What am I gonna do with you? You are getting reckless now and I don’t like it. I know we have the apocalypse to care about but that doesn’t mean you have to do it alone just because you feel guilty. It was us that started it and it will be us that will end it. Got it?”
Sam nods, slumps against Dean and just lets his brother hold him. This isn’t over, he knows it. But for now they are here and Dean is holding Sam.
“But if you ever let me walk into something unknowing like that I will end you. No matter what.”
“Okay.”
“Bed now.”
Yeah, Sam can live with this for now. It doesn’t mean that he won’t stop trying to keep Dean out of danger.

Prompt(s): 13. Omen
Rating: PG-13

Warnings: Might be spoilery up until 5.05
Summary: It has to be an omen, that Dean is there when Sam needs him
Red sky with white clouds, that’s all he sees from where he is lying in the grass. He hasn’t moved since he just let himself drop there after it was over.
It hasn’t been the final battle, not even close to it. Far from it actually but Sam doesn’t want to get up and look at the slaughter around him. It’s too much to take right now. He knows that the meadows, as well as the forest nearby, are littered with bodies. Almost all of them are there not out of their own volition.
Almost none of them gave consent. Possessed. Snatched to fight in a war they weren’t even aware of. But.. angels are there as well. Died in the line of duty. Sam, almost snorts at that thought.
Sam doesn’t want to see it. Doesn’t want to acknowledge the fact that this might be the way all the battles will go from now on. With all the losses they can and cannot take.
Dean is there. Right next to Sam. But Dean us looking, is taking it all in, and Sam doesn’t here a single sound from his brother. Castiel is around, too, so are Bobby, Ellen, Jo and Rufus. There are more hunters around, even people who get dragged into it without really knowing what it is all about.
Sam has no idea how any of them is doing, just knows that they are alive, still there. Sam doesn’t have the strength to do anything but lie there. Doesn’t even think, too caught up in the events and in the fact that his brother very clearly refused Michael…. Again.
Sam’s mind is stuck on the fact that he didn’t even need to refuse Lucifer this time. Lucifer just withdrew the second Dean stood there and held on to Sam’s hand. Of course it is not that easy, it is not over but for now it seems enough.
The battle still took place, Sam still couldn’t prevent it. The deaths, the bloodshed. Couldn’t prevent Dean from almost losing his mind when the sword pierced Sam’s body. Sam takes it as on omen that it was indeed Michael’s sword – the literal one - that almost ended him. That it was Michael’s sword not being held and guided by Dean.
Dean lies down next to him, doesn’t say a word though. For the first time in hours Sam takes his eyes away from the blood red sky and looks at his saviour. Dean looks back and there is something in his eyes that tells Sam that they will not give up. They will fight. Until the end.
