This is for
peaches who prompted me with: something like... 4 times Jared made a fool out of himself in public and one time jensen did?
you can play with that, but you know what i mean, right?
Title words are shamelessly stolen from Take That's "The Garden"
1.
Jensen doesn’t even know why he’s subjecting himself to this -- over and over again. He should know by now that nothing good can come out of it. Especially not when Jared’s trying to work the public like there’s no tomorrow. But Jensen doesn’t exactly discourage Jared, doesn’t stop Jared from making a fool of himself and, subsequently, out of both of them.
Because, if he’s being perfectly honest, Jensen has to admit that doing publicity events with Jared is so much more fun than doing them alone. Jensen tries not think about the fact that he actually likes Jared doing all this stuff to divert everyone’s attention. This time, though, Jared seems to have topped them all.
It’s not the clothes, because those are pretty okay for once. It’s not even the boisterous laughter or the flailing arms that almost catch Jensen in the face and are constantly draping themselves around his body. Nope, all of that is kind of normal since the first time they had to do a red carpet (or green in this case) together.
No, it’s nothing of the things that usually happen around Jared and public appearances. This time, the thing that comes back to smack Jared in the head -- and Jensen as well if the looks they are getting already are any indication -- happened before they even reached the event location.
Jensen knows that the extra pack of gummi worms Jared had in the car on the way over wasn’t the best idea Jared’s ever had. Especially not after the night they had. Jensen sees it as a lesson well learned. A lesson to himself.
Sending Jared out on the carpet during Upfronts with a hangover, nerves and a whole pack of inhaled gummi worms isn’t something he’ll let happen ever again. Not even with Jared’s puppy eyes operating in full force. Jensen is not that weak.
So Jensen tries to take a step back, tries to not be in the immediate vicinity of one Jared Padalecki, who is turning greener by the second.
Right now, though, Jared is sliding between being a hyper active puppy with flailing limps and a sugar-sick five-year-old looking for the best place to puke. Not to mention that the words coming out of his mouth are as close to verbal diarrhea as they come. Jensen just hopes things aren’t as bad as he thinks they are.
The second Jared rushes off to the side, Jensen knows he should step in and finish the interviews, talk about the show, about the network and how cool it is to be here. Instead he smiles his best smile, grins inwardly at the flashes going off even though he hates it and slowly follows Jared’s path down the carpet toward the retching sounds.
He’s glad that Jared had at least found a hidden corner and a trash can. He’s also glad that when Jared comes up again, the ever present grin is still there, which means Jared isn’t taking it too badly. Making a fool out of himself seems to be ingrained in his genes and no one can stay angry with Jared when he looks like a sick little puppy anyway.
Jensen tries to ignore the warm feeling of Jared’s back under his hand. He doesn’t even know when he reached out and started to run slow circles into the muscles. When Jared moves to straighten Jensen’s hand slips lower. Jensen sure as hell does not try to read anything in the slight shiver that makes Jared’s spine move under his hand.
Jensen, long ago, has given up any pretence that he doesn’t like touching Jared or be touched by him. At least in his own and well, maybe with his mom since she loves to comment on it and send Jensen secret smiles when doing so. So he coughs, takes the hand away and smiles at Jared’s sweat slicked forehead. No way he is going to look the man in the eyes now.
“I warned you.”
“Shut up and bring me water. There are still interviews to do… or if you want to do them, be my guest.”
Jensen doesn’t know why he obeys. It’s definitely not the pleading look in those eyes or the hand lingering on his wrist. Nope, not at all. He wouldn’t do everything for Jared. Just most things, but not everything as in everything.
Jensen has no idea whom he’s trying to convince, so he just stalks off, amazed at Jared’s ability to bounce back from almost everything in the matter of seconds. Jensen returns with a bottle of water and finds Jared grinning at Kristin from E!online and shooting him one of those smiles Jensen thinks are only for him. Or at least hopes that they are.
In this second, Jensen’s dislike for gossip and celebrity life makes him hope that Jared didn’t take a breath mint before bouncing over to her. He prays for it actually.
The look on Kristin’s face indicates Jensen might actually have success with the prayer.
2.
Jared can be exhausting. Living with him can also be exhausting, but not to such a degree that Jensen would consider moving out. Not now that he’s settled in so well. He’s finally gotten used to the house and to Jared living there, even if all Jensen wants to do is sleep when home and not listen to rambled one-sided conversations.
Most of the time Jensen ignores it anyway, settling for not listening to most of what Jared says or does around the house. So sometimes that means not noticing that Jared’s up to something – something maybe he might end up regretting later. And, really, Jensen is just relieved that it usually means Jared’s things end up broken and not his own.
In retrospect, it probably hadn’t been such a good idea to let Jared do all the laundry at once – at least not without arguing against it. Especially not when Jared had been as tired and as out of it as Jensen was himself. But Jared had insisted and Jensen was kind of hopelessly powerless when it came to those eyes and the pleading look they seemed to have perfected over the years. And so Jensen had just shrugged, agreeing to let Jared do his magic.
Or not.
When, two days later, they have to go to LA at the last minute, and it comes to packing, Jared just gets kind of grumpy. They leave in a hurry and Jared sullenly throws his bag into the taxi, and doesn’t clarify when Jensen asks what’s wrong. In fact, he doesn’t say anything else to Jensen until they land.
They go their separate ways; there’s no need to stick together when they won’t be able to do anything together for the next two days. Which means Jensen’s a little surprised when Jared calls him not 30 minutes after they parted.
He ignores the little flutter in his stomach and doesn’t think about how much he wants Jared to miss him when he isn’t there. It’s not an option. So he does what he does best in those situations, he ignores it.
“I have no clothes Jen. Help!”
“How can you have no clothes? You packed a whole bag.”
“Uh.. well. You know…”
“Actually I don’t. That’s why I am asking.”
“Smartass.”
Jensen can hear the smile though, but he still wonders how Jared managed to lose all of his clothes on the way from Jen’s apartment to the place he’s staying at now. Jensen also wonders why they aren’t staying at his place together. He remembers Jared mumbling something about reachability of places, not that is was even a word, but Jensen hadn’t said anything about that, too caught up in the reasons Jared used to make it sound logical.
“Jen?”
“Sorry. What? No clothes?”
Jared snorts on the other end of the line, but doesn’t say anything about Jensen’s inability to pay attention to their ongoing conversation. He’s gotten used to Jensen drifting off, which has been happening a lot lately and usually has something to do with the things Jared does or says.
“I might have shrunk them when I washed them.”
“You ... shrunk ... What. All of them?”
“No. God, just the ones I washed. And I was in a rush when I packed and couldn’t find anything clean that fit. So I packed those and hoped I could still wear them. And now all I have are those and some of your shirts. Which, by the way, I have no idea how they ended up with my things. Dude, one of those shirts is so damn tight I can’t breathe anymore.”
Jensen has a hard time forcing himself not to think about the fact that Jared is wearing really, really tight shirts and about the fact that Jared apparently has Jensen’s shirts. After all, it doesn’t mean anything anyway.
“Ever thought about it being mine, then?”
“Fuck off, Jen. It wouldn’t even fit you properly.”
Jensen just laughs. He starts a little when he realises that he’s missed this easy banter between them when it wasn’t there this morning. Jared not talking to him is something Jensen can’t stand.
“So. How can I help you?”
“Could I maybe come over and try some of your things? Please, Jeeen?”
He knows Jared has the puppy eyes on full display and even if he can’t see them, he knows exactly what they look like.
“Okay. Whatever. You’ll look like a dork. You are aware of that, right?”
“God, yes. But Jensen, your stuff is still larger than any of the things I have right now. I seriously refuse to wear my shirts under my armpits. It’s not the kind of party. Even though I think seeing my pecs might cause the exces to be even more tempted to renew us. Just you know ... out of fear they might be eaten by them or something.”
“Dork. Hurry up if you wanna come over. I have to be off in an hour.”
***
When Jensen sees the photos Chad sneaks to him at another CW get-together several weeks later, during the one moment Jared is distracted, Jensen has a hard time not cracking up right then and there, and thus almost blowing the whole ‘sneaking behind Jared’s back thing’ Chad had so generously set up.
He still can’t believe Jared actually chose those clothes, or that he actually let Jared out of the house wearing them. Several sizes too small doesn’t even cut it anymore. But Jared had insisted, like he had when he wanted to do the laundry, so Jensen had let him.
It’s not his fault that everyone kept staring at Jared with a mixture of barely hidden amazement and something close to fear. What’s funny though is the blush Jared can’t seem to shake off the entire time they’re there.
Jensen thinks it serves Jared right for going through Jensen’s entire clothing collection he has in LA and rejecting every single piece of it. Which meant in the end, as a form of punishment, Jensen had made him wear one of the two small shrunken shirts over one of his own pinkish party shirts from when he was 16.
He hadn’t counted on Jared huffing, declaring it presentable and stalking out of Jensen’s apartment without as much as a backward glance. Jensen should have known Jared could be stubborn. And he also shouldn’t find it as adorable as he does.
He hides the photos before Jared can see them and then adds them to the wall of shame in the make-up trailer once they are back to work.
People don’t stop giggling about it for a week. Not until Jared shows up wearing only Jensen’s pink shirt, telling everyone where he got it.
Jensen immediately promises himself that he’ll never ever help Jared with fashion advice again.
3.
Everyone on set is in a rush. Things got held up more than they’d planned and now they actually have to put in some work just to catch up. Jensen doesn’t mind it all that much, he’s all for working faster because it’s bloody cold and it’s raining.
He’d always assumed it would snow when it was this cold, but apparently it’s only cold on the ground and the clouds think it’s funny to unload every drop of water they have in them. Which makes everything slippery and kind of dangerous to move around on.
Jared, of course, doesn’t seem to mind. On the contrary, he even seems to enjoy the weather. It’s one of the days they’re on location and he’s brought the dogs with them. Mostly because the dog sitter was on vacation and Jared hated to leave them alone all day when he wasn’t sure how long they’d be shooting.
So, Jared’s actually sliding around on the frozen water, dogs in tow and ignoring all warnings. Jensen’s been telling him that if he’s not careful, everything will end badly for Jared or even bloody if the worst happens. But Jared’s so set on having it his way that he doesn’t even bother to pretend to listen.
Jensen gives up around the tenth time someone tells Jared to be careful. Jensen isn’t his mother and if Jared wants to land flat on his face, then he’s welcome to do so in Jensen’s opinion.
Except that Jensen can’t not watch Jared, and he finds himself on the look out for any missteps. As much as he wants to just go back to reading over the script, he can’t. And really, he’s cursing himself for worrying so much. Jared is an adult and despite all evidence to the contrary, he really does have his limbs under control. Most of the time, anyway.
So, when it happens, Jensen isn’t totally unprepared. He isn’t, however, prepared for the sudden drop his heart and stomach take or for the nausea he feels while watching Jared slide, skip and fall. All he sees are flailing limbs and Jared’s butt and back connecting with the concrete. Jensen thinks the squeak following that picture was surely in synch with everything.
Jensen is on his knees and by Jared’s side a mere second after the man hit the ice. Jared looks stunned. A little flushed and maybe a lot embarrassed.
“Are you okay, Jared?”
People are gathering around to see if they can help and to see if their stars are okay, either in body or in mind. Questions are directed at both of them and Jensen thinks he should feel annoyed by it.
Should feel angry that everyone automatically assumes he would freak out if something happened to Jared. Not that it isn’t true and not that Jared wouldn’t react the same way, but still, just out of principle and dignity, Jensen kind of hates it.
And, honestly, he’s not freaking out right now anyway. He just kneels there by Jared’s side and looks at him, and well maybe his hands are kind of stroking up and down Jared’s back, but then again no one is really looking at Jensen anyway. They just keep on asking them if they are okay.
“Jay?”
“I uh… yeah. Nothing broken I think. I should have..”
“Listened to us when we told you to be careful?”
Jensen has to hold back a snort at Jared’s murderous look and is glad he isn’t the one receiving it. Eric actually draws back a little.
“I did not trip on the ice. I just.. kind of poked myself in the eye when I tried to get something out of it and stepped on Harley’s leash.. Uh.”
Jared blinks up at Jensen and all Jensen can do is to bite his lip so that he isn’t the first one to start laughing. It takes a second, but then Jared snorts and it sets everyone else off. Jensen is still laughing when he helps Jared up.
He isn’t sure if it’s just the moment, his imagination or something else entirely, but he thinks Jared lingers a little before he steps out of Jensen’s arms and tries to get rid of the ice clinging to his pants.
“Thanks.”
“Dork.”
“I know.”
“Should listen to me more often.”
“I know.”
“You know? So why don’t you do it?”
Jared just smirks, takes Harley’s leash, drops Sadie’s in Jensen’s hand and turns on his heel.
“Because it’s more fun to be a bad boy from time to time.”
With that, he runs-slides off and along the patch off ice leading to their trailers, right through the middle of everyone still lurking around.
Sometimes Jared is more six than twenty-six. Jensen isn’t exactly complaining. Not when it makes Jared laugh like a demented seal, which makes him look a complete idiot but sets everyone else off as well.
4.
It doesn’t really matter if they are in semi-public, like now, or in really public places, Jared always behaves like no one can see or hear them. Well, not that’s not exactly true; he does behave differently when he knows that cameras and microphones are present. But when he thinks they are in private and not on the job, he is himself.
Jensen never quite knows how to take that. He doesn’t know if he should be embarrassed, horrified or just plain amused by the things Jared does and says, or by the things Jared actually gets him to do and say.
Like right now. They’re in one of their favourite restaurants trying to have dinner, but Jared isn’t having any of it. He’s talking. He’s been for hours non-stop and Jensen still hasn’t figured out what exactly Jared is talking about.
The flailing limbs are something that’s always there, as are the sparkling eyes when Jared is excited about something. Sometimes Jensen is surprised about the fact that he knows those things, which he actually had the time and the will to pay attention to and learn about. He is amazed how well they know each other.
Jared talks about his family, or at least that was the topic when Jensen lost the conversation and couldn’t follow anymore. The food is good and Jensen decides to stick to grunts and nods while he is occupied with dissecting his steak and the vegetables surrounding it.
When he shovels another forkful of delicious meat in his mouth and groans slightly at the taste Jared kind of jerks in his seat and almost upends the whole table with his knees. Jensen just looks up with a puzzled frown and tries to interpret the wide-eyed stare Jared is sending him.
“What?”
“You.. Have you heard a single word I just said?”
Jensen frantically tries to recall the sound Jared made before he tried to send all their dishes flying to the floor, but he can’t come up with anything that might be close to an actual word and just shrugs apologetically.
“Uhm, sorry? The steak is really good.”
Jared pouts. Not much, but it’s still there and Jensen feels like an ass. He knows how much Jared cares about Jensen’s opinion on certain topics he thinks are important. Not listening to him is almost as bad like Jensen’s saying he doesn’t care about Jared.
“Nice, Jen. I pour my heart out and you just go on eating a cow.”
“As far as I am concerned, you’re eating the same cow there, Jay.”
Jared just growls and stares at his half eaten food. Jensen is unsure about what to do now, because every time Jared acts un-Jared-like Jensen says something wrong and makes it even worse. He thinks he’s better off just staying quiet. He waits for Jared to say something. Because Jared always says something.
When more than five minutes pass without either of them saying anything, Jensen sighs, places his fork next to his plate and turns all of his attention on his best friend, who is poking morosely around his veggies. Jensen does not cringe at the mashed food, not all.
“Why did you just jump like that? I assume it wasn’t meant to send the plates in my direction. Because I was eating and didn’t need anymore food.”
Jared blinks slowly, blushes a little and shakes his head probably to indicate that he doesn’t want to repeat anything he said. Jensen has the feeling Jared knew he wasn’t listening.
“He was speaking hypothetically about pursuing something with someone that was not his usually prey.”
Both of them jerk around and blink at the couple in the booth next to him. The young woman just shrugs and smiles. Jensen thinks it’s either a mean smile or she’s trying to be sympathetic and it’s just not working all that well.
“And he wanted to know what you think about that. But then he went on talking about all the possibilities and all the things that could go wrong. And then you kind of moaned. He was rather loud there. I think half the restaurant heard him theorize.”
Jared is so red now that Jensen thinks he might pop or explode or something. And if Jensen didn’t think it was impossible, he might have said Jared was sliding down his chair while trying to hide under the table. Maybe it is lucky that Jared doesn’t fit under the table, otherwise Jensen would have never noticed that there really was something going on.
Jared isn’t meeting his eyes. Jensen glances around the room then and instantly thinks he shouldn’t have. In this very moment, he’s rather glad that this part of town is frequented by the upper class that usually doesn’t fall into their target group, so he is pretty sure they are kind of incognito.
The restaurant is small, operates solely on reservations but it’s big enough to host several booths and tables around the room. The people closest to them, which are only two tables including the booth right next to theirs, are deliberately trying not to listen in. They people try to look occupied with their food or conversations. But Jensen’s pretty sure it’s not working for any of them.
He wonders when his life became a publicly displayed soap opera and decides that it happened long before he even realized there was something like publicity. Jared and the show only enforced it … slightly.
Jensen looks back at Jared, who is uncharacteristically quiet and still as red as Jensen has ever seen him. He doesn’t really know what to say, so he stays quiet again. Jared seems to be okay with that or at least Jensen thinks so when the blush lessens and Jared even smiles a little.
Jensen feels content enough to go back to his amazing food and even Jared finally starts to eat again. There is something between them, but it’s not awkward so Jensen thinks it can wait until they are home. It’s peaceful, a nice evening and everyone around them seems to have gone back to their own dinners, which Jensen really appreciates considering that it really wasn’t their business anyway.
Of course he has to go and destroy it all by opening his mouth.
5.
Jensen just wants to enjoy his dessert. It’s chocolate cake after all and he really, really tries to keep his enthusiasm quiet and to himself. Of course, with Jared watching him, and Jensen isn’t sure what that is all about, he totally fails to reign himself in.
The moan escapes unwanted. Rather slow and building up in force until it’s out and hanging in the room between him and Jared. Jared’s eyes are wide and he is completely still, just staring at Jensen.
A snort from next to them makes Jensen turn his head. The woman from the neighbour booth just snickers and tries to hide it behind her napkin, but the twinkling in her eyes kind of betray her. Her partner isn’t as subtle and laughs a little more openly.
So much for the situation not being awkward.
“Uhm…”
“Good cake?”
Jared’s voice sounds ragged, rough and therefore deeper. Jensen shouldn’t think about what that voice is doing to him. He can’t help it, though.
And he doesn’t trust his own voice, so he just nods.
Jared just blinks a little, blushes again and doesn’t say anything else before going back to devouring his own dessert. It’s then that Jensen realises that he has no idea what Jared is having. He‘d been too focused on the situation and then on the cake itself to actually hear Jared order.
They are silent for another few minutes, until Jensen’s mouth runs off without him again. Though this time he actually says something. He will later blame it on the awesomeness of the cake and on Jared’s eyes constantly flicking to Jensen’s mouth. Because that and Jared’s red stained cheeks turn something on in Jensen’s mind.
Single words, pieces of sentences and images of Jared’s flailing arms and worried but excited face suddenly flash across Jensen’s consciousness. He thinks that maybe he did listened to Jared, at least a little, while being occupied with the steak. Amazing what the human mind is capable of, Jensen thinks while he tries to sort through the pieces of conversation he did register.
And then ... then suddenly everything clicks. It's so loud that Jensen imagines everyone in a radius of a few hundred miles heard it, and maybe even his parents in Dallas. Because that would be so typical, his parents knowing something about the going-on’s in the lives of their children -- things which said children were completely unaware of and then being the ones to tell them ‘we told you so’ when they finally realise what is going on.
Jensen is tempted to take his phone out to wait for the call which is sure to come. Since the click was so loud and everything.
He doesn't, because he's kind of occupied with staring at Jared. Too distracted to actually reach for his cell. Staring and gaping. And this time Jared seems to be the one not getting it because he is still spooning out the ice cream from his dessert.
Jensen opens his mouth, and he will always think and tell everybody who asks that he just wanted to ask if Jared’s ice cream fruit salad was as good as Jensen’s chocolate cake. Really, it was just supposed to be a simple question to keep the conversation going and help Jensen over the slight freak out he was having over an epiphany concerning Jared’s earlier one-sided conversation.
Except what comes out of his mouth is totally different. And maybe it's a little to loud as well, considering the reactions it gets from the booth next to them.
“You were talking about gay sex. With me.”
The man next to them actually chokes on his drink, but manages not to spit it out and across the table at his companion. The woman, though, is hopeless with laughter. Jensen glances over for a second, to apologize or something, but when he sees her tears he can’t help but smile sheepishly.
Yeah., he sort of just definitely made a fool out of himself. He will blame the really, really good food for the fogginess that's taken over his brain.
“It was hypothetical and not ... What?”
Jared’s face is trying to decide if it should go pale or flush. Right now, there are blotches of colour splattered over pale skin and a slight sheen of sweat is forming on Jared’s forehead. Jensen thinks this was probably not going the way Jared had planned it.
And there it is again. The click, which Jensen is pretty sure is only happening in his head, but it still makes him flinch a little. Probably because he deserves it being this loud, because he's been such a slow idiot.
“This is a date.”
This time it’s Jared almost choking and the couple next to them don’t even try to hide their laughter anymore. Yeah, okay, maybe Jensen is making a complete fool out of himself, but he just had to ask. Or well, he might have lost control over his brain-mouth connection.
“Uhm… Maybe?”
Jensen is glad that the restaurant emptied out a little over their dessert, so he doesn’t feel all too self conscious and foolish with the huge smile breaking out over his face. It’s not like he has been waiting for Jared to say something like that. Not really, anyway. Dreaming is allowed, right?
“Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Yeah. It’s a good date so far. And just so that we're clear, there's no need to talk about the things you were talking about in a hypothetical way.”
Jared sort of balks at that. He opens and closes his mouth several times without really saying anything and Jensen tries to ignore the snickers that reach them from the neighbouring booth.
“Huh? Not in a hypothetical way? You mean..?”
“Yeah.”
“God Jensen.. How long?”
“A while.”
Jared nods and he red stain on Jared’s cheeks comes back the instant Jensen lets himself smile the way he's always wanted to, but had never dared. This evening is perfect so far, even with them kind of talking around things and missing the important points for longer than they should have.
The couple in the booth next to them leaves while they're still busy smiling at each other. Kind of dorky and totally sappy, but happy in a way Jensen had missed for a long time. The woman smiles down at them when she passes their table.
“Thank you for a lovely evening. You guys kind of made it perfect. Good luck with everything. It looks like a really good beginning to me." She pauses, then goes on. "And don’t worry, you weren’t too loud.”
This time her smile is amused, but encouraging and really somewhat beautiful, so Jensen gives her a real smile in return and revels in the warm feeling her words left behind.
“Oh, thank God. I was afraid we cause some kind publicity faux pas.”
Jensen turns his eyes back to Jared in time to see all the tension drain out of his body and he can’t hold back a snort at that. They might have made fools out of themselves, but really, they weren’t that loud. At least Jensen knows he wasn’t, he can’t be too sure about Jared’s earlier rant since he'd missed most of it. But then again, Jared had been speaking about hypothetical things, so yeah not much to actually fret about.
“Faux pas, Jared? Onto big words now?”
“Shut it, Ackles. Can we maybe leave now?”
“What? Not enjoying the evening, Jared?"
“Oh, I am. I just want to get the second and third date done before we get home. So I thought I’d hurry things along a little.”
“Second and third date? What for?”
“I figured you for someone who waits until the third date to put out. And right now I really kinda want to kiss you, so I have to get those dates out of the way first.”
Jensen can’t hold back any longer and laughs.
“Jared?”
“Yes?”
“How often have we been here?”
“Uhm.. a few times.”
“How many of those times did you want it to be a date?”
“Probably half of them.”
“Consider it out of the way then.”
“Shit, Jen…”
Jensen has never seen Jared call for and pay their check that fast. But then again, he can’t wait to get home either and has no objections against at being almost dragged out of his chair when everything is settled. The evening is about to end perfectly and Jensen is looking forward to it. Really looking forward to it.
He's still trying to process everything, so he's a little loopy and doesn’t protest at Jared manhandling him as they leave the restaurant. It’s not like he really cares about the amused looks they're receiving.
The only thing that makes their departure a little less graceful is the fact that Jensen is actually so excited and dazed by the events that he sort of overlooks the step leading outside. Who can blame him when Jared is next to him, all radiant and happy, clutching to Jensen’s wrist and dragging him along?
So Jensen ends up flying out of the door instead of gracefully stepping out of it. He will deny the squeak later, but right then he can’t keep it in and it’s maybe what saves him from ending up face first on the gravel of the parking lot. Because?
Jared simply catches him.
