Jensen knows he is going to kill Eric one of these days. Slow, painful and all that. It’s not he first time he's felt this way and he's pretty sure it won’t be the last. This time, though, he's actually tempted to go through with it.
He doesn’t know why they had to make a tradition out of it. As if trying to find presents for his friends and family wasn’t already enough of a struggle every year. But no, Eric had to go and set up a stupid Santa gift thing for the whole damn crew.
Which isn’t the thing Jensen wants to kill Eric for, by the way.
The thing that has Jensen scowling at every single person that passes him while he stands in this stupid, over crowded mall and waits for the text message telling him who he has to by a Santa gift this year, is that Eric is weak enough to be persuaded by Jared.
Jensen hates the fact that after four years, Eric still hasn’t learned to say no to Jared, especially when Jensen has to deal with the consequences. Like right now, being commandeered into shopping at the mall when he rather wants to spend the last days before he flies home, not shopping but doing something entirely different.
Not that Jensen is any better at saying no to Jared, but he tends to forget that fact regularly. The problem is that Jensen knows how happy Jared is about the whole Santa thing and how much planning, persuading and bribing he puts into it every year so that Jensen as well as Jared end up with each others names in the text messages.
Of course that both pretend that Jensen doesn’t know any of it and Jensen doesn’t plan on telling Jared that he does. Ever. He would hate to ruin it for Jared. Would hate that even more than he hates Eric for ever coming up with an idea like the Santa gift thing.
Jensen also knows that Jared plans it so that everyone else ends up with suitable partners as well, but for no one else does Jared do so much planning, convincing and bribing as he does for Jensen. It is sort of flattering; Jensen has to admit that much. And he always wonders where Jared gets the time to do it, he secretly things Sera has the planning down and Jared just agrees to the names she matches.
But Jensen sort of likes the idea that Jared's planning it for them and how he keeps on coming up with hilarious variations of names with the initials J and P for Jensen’s text messages or J and A for his own, to keep up the pretense and be able to deny any knowledge of something being wrong.
And it works every, year because Jared has Erik and Sera on his side and if asked, Erik can always come up with all papers proving such crew members actually exists and Sera would always back them up.
For Jared, all of this is a way to be able to hand out gifts to Jensen he usually wouldn’t even touch, not openly anyway, no matter how jokingly he would try to come across as. Jared is a huge romantic and if he thought he’d live through it, he'd show it even more.
And if Jensen is honest with himself, he actually loves that Erik gives in to Jared. letting him talk him into it every single year, because this way Jensen has the chance to get away with gifts and make Jared smile even more. It’s his excuse for feeling excited about it all anyway, it’s all for Jared.
So when his cell phone vibrates and just two words show up on the display Jensen actually snorts and has to bite his cheek to not crack up.
“Jean Paul.”
It’s so Jared that Jensen thinks that maybe this day isn't so bad after all, especially considering that he will, of course, ask Jared whose name he got when he goes home. And Jensen may hate Eric a little less when he stops in front of a shop window and see the perfect watch. He wears that smile for the rest of the day.
He knows he can get away with it, since Jared has no way of protesting a gift that he officially never got. One of these days, Jensen thinks, he really ought to tell Jared that show-off gifts aren’t the best way to keep his plans hidden. Jensen, though, suspects that it was never really Jared’s plan anyway.

He knows it’s the wrong present the second he takes it out of his bag. The paper it’s wrapped in is right, but the name tag is totally wrong, both the colour as well as the shape. He never would have dared to attach something like that to Megan’s gift. Never ever.
After a minute of panic and searching his entire bag once, and then again, he has to admit defeat. He either forgot to pack it or he grabbed the wrong gift from the pile of gifts they had set up before they started packing their bags for Texas.
For a while he doesn’t really know what to do, because it is 9pm on Christmas Eve and he was just about to place all the gifts under the tree when he realized he had the wrong one. So there's no chance in getting a new gift for his sister now or even getting the one he is holding to the person it's meant for.
He's kind of close to tears when his mom comes into the room and finds him sitting on the floor clutching the box while staring off into space. She takes one look at him and knows something is wrong.
“Jared?”
When he looks up, he knows he's using his puppy eyes full force because her face immediately softens and she has a gentle smile on her lips.
“I packed the wrong gift. I have nothing for Meg now and.. and Jensen won’t have anything either because I think I packed Meg’s gift in his bag.”
“But Jared, you’ll see him in a few days and Meg can wait that long. She isn’t five anymore. And I am pretty sure Jensen can wait that long as well.”
“I just kind of wanted to.. I planned on calling him tomorrow morning to ask him how he likes it you know?”
His mother smiles, shakes her head but not in a pitying or patronizing way and is about to answer when his cell phone rings. Jared can’t help but smile, even though one of these days he’ll kill Jensen for changing his ring tone. He sure as hell is not a womanizer, not matter what the gossips say.
With a laugh and a pat on his had that leaves his hair in even more disarray, his mom leaves him and Jared feels a little better, just because she is there and understands. She just gets it every time.
“You know, I'm pretty sure I am not the Barbie type even if you seem to insist on calling me a girl every so often.” Jensen says without preamble. Jared just snorts, looks down at that tag he used for Jensen’s gift and laughs out loud.
“Do I want to know what you used for my real gift? Assuming I am right and you didn’t actually think it’s funny to call me Meg-bunny.”
“No. It’s really Meg’s because I'm actually holding yours in my hands right now. I am so sorry, Jen. I must have grabbed the wrong box.”
“It’s okay, Jared. I can wait a while. Don’t worry.”
Jared is pretty sure he hears several sets of snorts in the background and Jensen mumbling something that suspiciously sounds like “shut up” but he isn’t really sure so he doesn’t comment on it and keeps on talking to Jensen for a bit until it’s time to say goodbye.
He is still a little disappointed about the mix up, but he knows Jensen is okay with it. But even so, he can't help little sad that they hadn’t managed to get their families together again like that had last year. Conflicting schedules during holidays suck.
His mom comes out of the kitchen, hands him a glass of milk and is about to shoo him up the stairs when the door bell rings. And she doesn’t even seem to surprised, just walks back through the hallway and opens the front door, smile already set and welcoming.
“I think our sons had a mix up with their presents.”
“Yes, I believe so.”
The second Jared hears Donna Ackles’ voice he is down the stairs again and at the door grinning stupidly at Jensen who looks a little like a five year old right then. Donna has his arms clasped in her hand and Jensen is actually blushing.
The spell is broken when Mackenzie and Josh barge in, followed by Alan at a more sedate pace.
“Mix up? Jen wouldn’t stop whining about how he forgot to get Jared his present. And when he found Meg’s in his bag it was the prefect excuse to drive down here.”
Mackenzie moans and sets off up the stairs, probably to harass Meg. But Jared doesn’t mind, he is too focused on Jensen, who just grins now and shakes his head.
“Didn’t whine as much as being a little upset.”
“Like Jay here. I think he was close to tears.”
“Mom!”
“Oh, Jensen too, I think.”
“Mom!”
When they are alone in the kitchen, after everyone settle down in respective guestrooms or bedrooms Jensen settles down at the kitchen table and smirks.
“I didn’t think it would work.”
Jared nods and blinks a little. He is still in the process of getting over the fact that Jensen's really there.
“It probably wouldn’t have if you'd told me about it first. Man, I was really kind of upset and a little panicky. I just thought you’d forget to give me yours so that you can get here tomorrow evening. How pathetic are we anyway? I just hope no one knows or will ever find out.”
“Well, if it is any consolation I think at least our moms know and they didn’t seem to mind.”
“Of course they do. They think we are cute, even while being totally pathetic. I'm just glad it worked and that you're here. Would have sucked not to have your present on Christmas or you know, for you not to have mine. Not to mention, I wouldn’t live it down from Meg for forgetting her present.”
Jensen just grins a little more, pulls Jared down on his lap and hugs him close.
“Next time we probably should just tell them that we want to spend Christmas together. Would spare me a drive through holiday traffic with a whining and mocking family in the car.”
Jared laughs, leans down and celebrates the plan actually working with the kiss he's been craving all day.
