Notes:
This is for For
sandrine, who prompted me with Gossip Girl and wanted
1. Spotted: Chuck Bass getting busy outside the business hours. Seems like *pantless* will be the new fashion on the Upper East Side.
Chan was what Chuck would call an accident. She didn’t even fall into his usual hunting style. And yet she still ended up where most of his conquests did, on Gossip Girl.
It wasn’t even his fault, but there really wasn't any use in feeling shame after getting caught in the bathroom of one of the most exclusive restaurant in Manhattan.
Especially not when it riled his father up this much. If Chuck had known that being seen with the most valuable secretary on Gossip Girl would actually make his father to talk to him again, Chuck might have done it a little earlier.
***
2. Spotted: C and Queen B staking claims around each other’s properties. Or are they their own? Not a proper way to handle things, but definitely entertainment for the masses.
It was never a secret and Chuck hadn't really planned to keep it one. As often as Blair was spotted on Gossip Girl, it was rather disappointing how long it took for them to land on it together.
It wasn't much, just a little spat on the street about things Chuck long had forgotten about but Blair obviously hadn’t. They shouted, or well Blair did. Chuck tried to keep his calm and get them away from the spotlight.
But Blair shouted, blamed, threatened and finally made an offer. And all of it pretty much in public and in front of everyone, only not quite. They were hidden behind some bushes, hidden from view, but not completely.
He might have been amused by the Gossip Girl message if he hadn’t already been bored by it, and maybe a little embarrassed, by it. Not embarrassed because it happened, but instead because he'd let himself being out talked by Blair.
It won’t ever happen again. He's promised himself that much. And Chuck Bass always keeps promises, no matter what it takes to keep them.
***
3. Spotted: C and N following nature’s call, only to be reminded that friendship is something one should value above all else. Instincts are not everything, boys.
Things with Nate had been on a downward spiral for a couple of weeks before Chuck finally gets over himself and actually helps his best friend. It would have been a better, a sweeter victory, if he didn't have to rely on someone like Vanessa to get him close to Nate.
It hurt. More than Chuck was willing to admit. To himself or anyone else. Not that he'd even admit such thing in the first place.
After getting Nate back on track, back no his side and into the right society, something that offered the best kind of distraction, Chuck actually believed that things could go back to the way they used to be.
How he hated being wrong.
It was just one small step, one thing he thought would strengthen their friendship, would make them share more, and share it deeper.
Only that Nate didn’t think so. He was okay with the drunken kisses, with hands down pants and mutual gratification. But that’s where it stopped. And the longer and the harder Chuck pushed, the faster and the farther Nate withdrew, probably without even realising it.
Taking it out on each other after at a night club, after dragging off girl after girl to the bathroom to satisfy a need that appeared every time Nate was close, Nate snapped.
He accused Chuck of being a pig, told him that his moral high ground was just a façade -- even if he himself was nothing more than a horny teenager with nothing but meaningless sex to live for.
It turned out that the back of the club hadn’t been as deserted as they'd thought.
It took them weeks to talk again and even if it hurt, even if that stupid Gossip Girl message still reminded them of the unsolved issues between them, Chuck actually made an honest attempt at being a good friend.
Maybe for the first time in his life. Because not being friends with Nate hurt more than the awkwardness that grew between them. It hurt more than fighting with Nate, but it helped still knowing that he would be there in the end.
So Chuck conceded, stepped back and settled into the spectator's seat in Nate’s life. It was working better than he thought it would.
And honestly? Even spectators had some influence on the plot.

4. Spotted: Chuck Bass being ambiguously open to new suggestions, even those that don't seem to have his best interests in mind.
It was one way of having fun. He should have known that things he could lose control, but he just didn’t think of it during the few times he visited the place.
He had fun, paid, and then left.
It was easy like that. No strings attached, not commitment and certainly no feelings to get in the way of things.
Only that it really wasn’t as easy as it seemed. Pictures never lie and even Chuck Bass had to admit that expensive Photoshop and computer skills didn’t come close to the originals.
He paid the money, saw the girl one last time and tried to slip away unnoticed. But his luck was as beaten as his ego that day.
So ending up on Gossip Girl with a high-class prostitute hanging from his arm, her lips attached to his cheek and her hand grabbing a white envelop really hadn’t been the best way to spend his birthday.
And Bart hadn’t even been mad about that. No, he'd been mad about Chuck stupidly letting himself open enough for blackmail in the first place.
Life was a learning experience. Chuck sometimes just felt like some lessons were unjustifiably cruel.
***
5. Spotted: C spreading seasonal flair among his peers, but walking home alone.
Chuck doesn’t mind ending up as gossip or being featured on Gossip Girl, what with all his escapades and conquests. Even if it hurts sometimes, or wasn’t planned, it's still exposure and an easy way of establishing a reputation.
Chuck doesn’t mind it, most of the time.
There are things he doesn't bother to keep secret, things that he doesn't mind having out in the open. But then there are the things he hides, because he has secrets no one needs to know and he has to protect himself, after all.
He never really cares what his conquests think about it bring on Gossip Girl. Never bothered to give it another thought and probably won't think about their feelings in the future.
Except for Dan. Somehow, he's different. Chuck keeps Dan to himself -- not suitable for prying eyes and public voyeurism, at least that's what he uses as an excuse.
With Dan, it’s something Chuck really can't control. He doesn’t like being watched while losing, or not having, control. Dan is occasionally unpredictable, brings uncertain and surprising elements into Chuck’s world, into Chuck’s order of things.
It throws him sometimes, causes him flail around helplessly for a bit until he's grounded, found a base he can stand on and then finally face Dan again.
Dan doesn’t mind being hidden away, being kept safe from prying eyes and knowing glances. Sometimes, Chuck even thinks Dan likes not being the focus of many, but instead being the focus of one.
Chuck shares a lot of things with a lot of people: knowledge, advice, friendship when deserved, and money if he's forced to. But Chuck never shares precious things, never shares things that he wants for himself and only for himself.
Chuck doesn’t share Dan. And so far it's worked and it will work in the future because Chuck knows how to work Dan. He understands how to make him follow suggestions and keep him away from unwanted attention. Or at least to keep him out of focus when he's around Chuck.
But sometimes Dan shows up unusual places at unusual hours. Chuck's never had to send him away, never allowed him to come in or stopped him from following him home -- at least not yet. Chuck thinks he doesn’t know, not anymore, how to say no or how to say it doesn’t work like this. He just doesn’t know how to utter those words around Dan.
So maybe it’s not Chuck controlling things, but Dan controlling Chuck. Either way, it's kept them out away from the spotlight and for the first time in his life, Chuck likes not being the center of attention.
Dan is something different. Something new. Something Chuck's not yet bored with. And Dan? Well, Dan doesn’t seem to be bored by him either.
So, Chuck will keep on checking the street, the doorways and corners for hidden watchers and prying eyes. Just to keep something precious for himself. Something that seems to be only for him.
Something that makes him not want to share and that makes him hope that Dan doesn't want to share either.

Date: 2008-12-08 09:51 am (UTC)From:I love that reasoning - it's Chuck in a nutshell! You captured him so well in the fic, his father issues, the mess of his relationships with Blair and Nate, the haughty attitude. And I really loved that last bit with Dan!

Date: 2008-12-08 01:54 pm (UTC)From:Getting Chuck right was kind of the problem, the few tries I always thought he was too nice or too OOC.
And well, I had to take Dan last because I couldn't imagine anyone else. ;)
I just realized that I have no idea where to post things like this because I in no GG fic community.. *lol*
