Note/Summary:
This is for [livejournal.com profile] hoveringon, who prompted me with J2 and icecream, so I wrote this:

1.
It was the first thing they ever did together in Vancouver. After the second episode was finished and they finally had a day off, they went to get ice cream on a Sunday afternoon. It was warm outside; sunny, but windy. It was rather quiet and not many tourists were out at the ice cream parlour one of the crew members told them about.

Jensen still remembers it like it happened yesterday, and still remembers his astonishment at the sight of Jared polishing off the two huge banana splits. The one thing, though, that's branded into his mind is the huge smile he got when he bought Jared the third huge split.

It was the first time that Jensen was subjected to that force of the Padalecki nature. It also was the start of a tradition -- of the friendship they still value higher than almost anything else.

2.
The first time they go home to Texas together, Jared doesn’t miss the chance to show Jensen around San Antonio. He even promises not to complain about anything when Jensen returns the favor in Dallas.

They, of course, end up at one of the malls where Jared spent his teenage years. Jared isn’t even sure how he gets Jensen to agree; but in the end, they walk through almost all of the mall just to get some hot fudge sundae from the small McD counter at the end of it. They do it even though there is a perfectly fine and huge McD at the entrance they used.

All Jared knows, at the end of the day, is that he really starts to love the laugh and fond smile Jensen sent him when Jared insisted that the sundae from the counter was so much better than the one from the larger fast food joint.

It’s the beginning of another tradition, at least Jared sees it like one. Jensen starts to look for those smaller counters whenever they travel together. And, of course, he always finds one.

3.
Jared brings Jensen a variety of ice cream boxes and containers when Jensen is down with the flu during their first short hiatus of season one.

It’s the first time they realise that they don’t mind being together at their worst; or even taking care of each other.

Jared just learns to mostly ignore a grumpy Jensen, while Jensen tires to get over his irrational fear of Jared’s tissues. Jared learns that he loves to share his tub of Rocky Road with a grumbling Jensen, even though the overdose of milk in there makes his stomach a little achy. But it makes Jensen smile eventually, so Jared doesn’t mind his little stomach ache that much. Which means that Jensen shares his chocolate soy box when Jared isn’t feeling well.

Ice cream just makes things easier.

4.
It was over ice cream that Jensen got Jared talking, it was also the first time this strategy ever worked for him.

A huge tub of chocolate soy, a smaller one of Rocky Road, Harley licking away at the small glop of ice cream he scored, Sadie trying not be too needy while pushing at Jensen’s hand and Jensen moving the tubs around so that Jared can reach both were the only witnesses of Jared breaking down after the break-up with Sandy.

Quiet sobs were only intercepted by the scrape of the spoon inside one of the boxes and Jared’s sniffles. They'd talked hours before Jensen had even thought of getting the emergency stash of ice cream out of the freezer.

Jared had scolded him, told him he wasn’t that much of a girl but the pleading look had almost broken Jensen’s heart. So he got the boxes out, along with two spoons and settled both of them down on the couch of the living room.

It had been months since the break-up, but it finally seemed to catch up with Jared. Now that they were back in the routine, back to shooting their show, back in Vancouver, back home, things seemed to be real all of a sudden.

When Jared calmed down and both boxes were almost empty, Jensen couldn’t help himself anymore. He leaned over and hugged Jared close. Maybe moving in hadn’t been such a bad idea after all.

Jared kissed him a few minutes later, when Sadie was following Harley out to the kitchen to get some dog food to eat and Jensen was about to get up and clean the little mess. This time it was Jared who leaned over.

The kiss was flavoured with two kinds of ice cream and the M&M’s Jensen had been eating as well. It was kind of the flavour of their friendship, a mix of sweet soy, dark chocolate, rocky pieces and colourful candy.

The things you could do with ice cream.

5.
Jared is nervous and Jensen doesn’t know why. It’s their usual Sunday afternoon ice cream spree and Jensen thinks it's the perfect way to get Jared to relax after the week they’d had.

But it just isn't happening. It worried Jensen a little, but not enough because Jared's still digging into his first banana split with vigour.

It’s when Jared refuses to order another that Jensen knows something's up.

“Care to tell me what is on your mind?”

“I… I just wanted to ask you something. Just don’t know if it’s the right time.. or place.”

“Will it be cheesy?”

“Suppose so.”

“Well, this is an ice cream parlour. We're surrounded my teenagers, couples, young families and kids with ice cream-smeared faces. So I’d say it is the perfect place to be cheesy. But that’s just my opinion.”

Jared just stares for a second, then gets up and goes to the counter. He returns five minutes later with one of the kid’s surprise sundaes and hands it over to Jensen.

“I kind of didn’t have time to go and look for a real one, but there is one in the surprise section.”

Jensen is so confused that he doesn’t really understand what Jared's saying until he opens the surprise box attached to the sundae. Inside, he sees one of those plastic rings you usually get in a gum package. He blinks a few times before taking the ring out and marveling at the sparkly pink colour it displays.

Jared’s snort kind of destroys the moment, but completely.

“So, I guess I know what you are asking ...”

“You do?”

“Yes.”

“So?”

“Well, you see, I cannot possibly deny you anything, much less saying yes to this awesome ring you presented me with. Oh Jared, how did you know my favourite sparkly colour?”

Jared is snorting again, then laughs out loud and just kind of tackles Jensen against the side of the booth they are sitting in.

“Yes?”

“Yeah, Jared. Yes.”

This time, it’s not really a beginning. It’s just a continuation of everything they'd already started.
