Summary: Jared has been down, Jensen might be baking and there is day off
Notes: This was written for
peaches's birthday.
And it also fits the
notjustroomates May prompt of "The boys have an unexpected day off together...how do they spend it?"
When Jared crashes into the kitchen all loud and excited Jensen has a hard time not dropping the cake batter and spatula he tries hiding from Jared. Not that Jared actually registers anything but his own excitement at the moment.
“Dude, they just called. Didn’t they call you as well? No? Must have thought I’d tell you anyway. Anyway…. We have a day off, man. Something with the location or whatever. Don’t know. We have a day off. Means the whole weekend. Jensen! Sleep! And lazing around. Jensen, this is awesome.”
Jensen stares at the flailing limbs and the bouncing man in front of him. It’s hard not to burst out laughing at the sight but he is too occupied staring anyway. It’s been a while since he has seen Jared that enthusiastic. Jared had been a little subdued lately, cue Jensen trying to actually bake and not totally ruining his mom’s banana chocolate cake.
So far the surprise still stands since Jared isn’t really paying attention to anything but his own excitement.
“Dude, we could actually go out again. Or you know, have a day with the dogs. Go up to Whistler. Jensen, we could…. Are you baking?”
Okay, so much for Jensen keeping it secret with Jared being in the same room as food. He should have known that it might not work out as planned but he hadn’t been prepared for Jared to actually be back so soon from the run with the dogs.
“Uhm… Maybe?”
Jared blinks, hasn’t exactly stopped bouncing yet, but isn’t flailing anymore either.
“Why are you hiding it behind your back?”
Jensen wants to roll his eyes because Jared actually is intelligent, has a brain to make up for the body but sometimes he is just not fit to be let loose on the world. And sometimes he is just slow on the uptake, and Jensen doesn’t really want to think about all the things Jared hasn’t gotten yet. A question like this is just typical.
“What do you think?”
“Awwww Jensen. You are doing it for me? And as a surprise even? I love you.”
And then Jensen is wrapped in strong arms and squashed against muscles he has only been staring at for the better part of the last year. The spatula is clasped tight in his hand and dripping cake batter on Jared’s shirt and the floor. It’s kind of telling that Jensen is always the one cleaning the kitchen after every time they both have been in the room. And sometimes Jensen has dreams about all the ways they could make the kitchen dirty again.
Right now would not be the right moment to think about that though.
His brain is stuck on Jared’s words even though he knows it was said without the real meaning behind it. But being pressed against Jared in a hug that could be called fierce isn’t helping with getting his brain unstuck again.
Jensen snuffles against Jared’s neck, doesn’t even try to get away because he knows it’s fruitless. Jared will let him go when Jared wants to let him go, Jensen has learned that lesson during the first two days of their acquaintance.
Jensen doesn’t want to get away anyway, and this might be the greater reason for why they stand there like that for more than five minutes. Jensen just takes it all in, every sent, every movement of the muscles underneath his hands and cheek where it’s pressed against Jared’s shoulder. Everything.
He loves Jared’s hugs because they are the only non-scripted opportunity for him to get real close without being too suspicious. Because it’s usually Jared who initiates the Padahugs. Jensen can live with that. Doesn’t really want to live without them anymore.
He has long before come to the conclusion that Jared is like a drug and that he is intensely addicted to him. Steve had actually agreed before breaking down and having a laughing fit that lasted an hour.
“You are really baking for me Jensen? Really?”
Jensen doesn’t draw back immediately but he wants to see Jared’s face then. But when he does he is kind of stunned by the small smile and the shining eyes that greet him. Jared looks happier than he has in a while and Jensen heart so does not make a jump in his chest. His heart doesn’t jump, okay? He isn’t 80 and with a pacemaker. So yeah, no jumping, just maybe a little tug and a faster beat. That’s all.
“Uh.. You looked down, so I thought sugar might cheer you up. And you didn’t wanna talk so I kinda still wanted to do you some good.”
Jensen shrugs and feels a little self conscious then and there. He usually isn’t embarrassed in front of Jared anymore. It had taken more than a year to get over that and some merciless teasing by Jared and an assorted group of friends, but Jensen is proud of himself that he isn’t blushing at everything Jared’s says or does that could eventually be interpreted as innuendo.
Jared smiles, all wide and happy and pulls him back into the hug. The hug that never really ended anyway. Jared sighs against Jensen’s head, ruffles his hair with the little puff of air and doesn’t let go. This time it’s Jared who keeps them like this.
Suspended in time.
Something shifts then. Something small and not all that big to notice. But they both tense up within a second only to really relax into each other. Jensen feels Jared’s lips press against his temple. It’s just a small touch, barely there and still it manages to take Jensen’s breath away.
It’s so simple, so uncomplicated that he wonders why he ever thought it would be anything but. It’s just them, just the way they work. They will eventually talk about it but right now there is no need to. They are both there and neither of them is actually protesting or trying to get out of the situation.
It pretty much screams ‘mutual’. Jensen is inclined to take what he gets and what he can have. Jared seems to be on the same page though and mumbles a ‘Thank you’ into Jensen’s hair and just tugs him a little closer. To Jensen it sounds more like another ‘I love you’ and his ‘you’re welcome’ could be seen as a ‘me, too’ but then again they aren’t there yet and Jensen thinks it would actually destroy the whole thing before it has even started. If there is anything to start, which Jensen is pretty sure about but no one ever knows what will come so he tries not to think too much about it or to freak out.
No, freaking out would be really bad here and it would destroy the peaceful mood and then Jensen would hate himself and Jared would probably just think he is an idiot and never do such and amazing thing with his mouth again as he is doing now.
Jensen actually moans a little at Jared’s lips slowly moving over the shell of his ear. It’s unfair how much this is actually affecting him.
“You think too much Jensen. Just… just let it be. Let us be. Let it happen.” The slow growl that is evident in Jared’s voice sends shivers down Jensen’s body and he is helpless and actually unable to stop them. Jared chuckles, licks his ear again and tightens his arms around Jensen a little more.
He is almost crushing Jensen now.
Jensen loves it.
“I so know what we are gonna do with this fine day off?” Jared almost whispers, barely breaks the silence that has settled around them. Even the dogs seem to be aware of it and have laid down in front of the fridge and just watch what’s going on.
“Yeah?” Jensen whispers back. He doesn’t really know why they are whispering but it seems appropriate for some reason.
Jared nods, drags Jensen to the counter and just manhandles him in front of the cake form and the bowl with the batter.
“Yep. You’ll make the cake and I’ll watch. Then we’ll sit outside in the sun, and yes you can wear your scarf and mittens you pussy, eat the cake and watch the dogs run around. Later will watch the many hockey games we’ve TiVoed and we will not under any circumstance talk about work. Sound good?”
Jared is bouncing again and Jensen can’t help but laugh. It does sound good. Very good even and he is pretty sure that even Jared couldn’t have missed the thing that has shifted between them just now.
“Yeah, sounds good.”
“I love days off. And unexpected ones are so much better even.”
Jensen knows that the unexpected does not only describe the day off now. He smiles at Jared when he goes back to finishing the surprise that now isn’t one anymore but is still something he is doing for Jared.
So Jensen just makes the cake, with Jared settled against the counter right next to him and the dogs still huddled together in front of the fridge. Jared is close and they brush against each other with almost every move. Jensen loves the sparks that suddenly race up his skin with every contact.
They have smiles on their faces and the things they talk about are nothing deep or profound, just things they want to say and want each other to know.
It’s simple.
It’s how it’s supposed to be.
