Surreal is an understatement.

The whole situation is something out of a science fiction novel or a murder mystery but seriously not something out of Reagan Ronald’s life. His life just doesn’t turn surreal and sweeps him off his feet. It just doesn’t do it. Only lately it does.

It’s not like his life was all that regular but had a certain structure before everything went downhill. He had a job, still has thank God, had a nice place, still there, too; and he had something close to friends among his neighbours, judgement is still out on that though.

Sometimes he thinks he should have known that, giving this interview hadn’t been a good idea, would mean trouble. He thinks that if he had known his life would change so drastically he hadn’t given it. Back then though he just thought it was a way of handing out compensation, because he had thought and still thinks that he had been wrong about the freaks. Most of them anyway.

Original Cindy is still around, keeping contacts alive and running so Reagan knows what’s going on, even though he still tries to show a certain kind of disinterest, like he always did. It’s harder now than it was before… before his Golden Boy decided to change sides and actually make him see what was going on.

None of the former Jam Pony freaks has been anywhere near the ‘normal’ areas of the city. Reagan thinks he should stop calling them freaks. He has learned after all. And it seems as if he is still learning.

It’s been days since the siege at Terminal City and things are starting to quiet down, Reagan starts to quiet down, to settle into a life somewhat resembling his former semi-regular one. He goes out again, does his job, treats his employees the same way he always did. And if he sometimes feels like there is something missing he doesn’t dwell on it for too long, because that would mean taking in the surreality of everything and he isn’t ready for that.

Maybe that’s why he is shocked into an impression of a gaping fish when he opens up Jam Pony two weeks after the siege and finds Alec already inside. Purged against the iron frame of the command desk, grinning and looking smug but tired. Reagan doesn’t think about why he notices how tired Alec looks.

And he sure as hell isn’t concentrating more on the fact how good the other man still looks despite the rings under his eyes and the slightly dishevelled hair, instead of asking what the Transgenic is doing here.

“Hey boss. Should check the backdoor, lock’s no good.”

“What? What are you doing here?” For a second Reagan is glad he could stop gaping and looking like and idiot in front of Alec. Only for a second though before his own indignation takes over and he walks swiftly to the desk to open it up. People will be here soon, he has to get busy if he wants to start things up, there are after all a lot of things to do, like packages to deliver, bikes to repair, avoiding to stare at his golden boy.

“Oh you know.. just checking things. I was on a run.. supplies and stuff. Thought I’d drop by.”

He still doesn’t get Alec, even now that he knows why some of the oddities surrounding the other man never were those, but simple effects of transgenic power and intellect, and sometimes maybe even inexperience in life. There is no reason for Alec to be here.

Reagan isn’t as bold as to think he would be enough of one for Alec to come back. So there must be something else. Maybe they need help. But what could he help with? Or they needed money, but he doesn’t have that either, not much anyway. To say he is confused is putting it mildly.
“Checking in? What for.. no job here for you boy. Nothing else here for any of you.”

“Come on Normal. Can’t I just come and check on a friend who kind of was caught up in a situation because of me and my friends?”

“Didn’t know you cared.”

Alec frowns, making his face look even more boyish but making him look more tired than before as well.

“I do. And I kind of wanted to thank you. Never got around to doing it before now.”

“Thank me?”

“You know? For your help. The interview. Maybe for seeing… the truth.”

“The truth?” Reagan wonders when Alec will get tired of his short answers and will vanish again. For some reason he doesn’t really want to think about the thought of Alec leaving makes him twitch, makes him want to reach out and grab the man. Keeping him close had always been a prime motive for Reagan to employ Alec despite the little private business the Transgenic had going on sometimes. Sometimes Reagan even allowed himself to think about the reasons.

“Yeah.. you know. Us not being monsters. God, I sound like Logan here. I am sorry Normal. I just… I was around and thought I’d drop by.”

Reagan turns, nods and goes back to sorting through paper work. He can’t look at Alec, not now. He hears Alec shift against the wall next to the desk, hears a zipper going down and then up again, hears a small thunking noise when something is placed on the desk. And then nothing. And then Alec.

“Thank you.”

It’s silent after that. Reagan though doesn’t dare to look, doesn’t dare to turn around. He is afraid of what he will see or more of what he won’t see. When he finally gets a grip on himself and turns Alec is gone. The spike in his chest, the thumbing of his heart against his ribcage, the heat of his skin, all that where things he had gotten used to since the first time Alec had entered Jam Pony and Reagan had recognized him as his golden boy.

He had gotten used to the feeling of seeing Alec go and never take a second look at him, he had gotten used to telling himself that he’d never have a chance anyway. Reagan told himself that now more than ever. Transgenics stayed among themselves. It was a fact. He would always be the one admiring from afar.
When he looks at the desk though he can’t help but gasp. It’s nothing he expected to see and nothing he ever thought would be brought to him by a man who was on the run. Reagan doesn’t know how Alec got the things and he doesn’t know how Alec knew Reagan would love to have them, but they are there.

He rushes to grab them and manages to stow them inside his own locker right before the door opens and the first of his employees enter Jam Pony for another day of work and Bip Bip Bips from him.

Through the day he checks his locker every so often to make sue the things are still there. He makes plans for when he is back home, makes plans on how to keep the beer cool and the chocolate from melting and the cookies from being eaten by mice. Reagan wonders how good of an observer Alec really is. No one knew about the cookie addiction until apparently now.

It’s the first day of many during the following months that Alec shows up, either early in the morning or late at night when he is sure it’s only him and Reagan, and he always has something to give. And it’s always things Reagan never thought anyone knew about.

Reagan is getting used to having Alec around again, even if it’s odd and a little awkward most of the times. They never really talked much before but they are starting to now. They talk about mundane things, about Terminal City, about how Alec settles into his new role of representative, about how life is treating the other former Jam Pony employees, even about Joshua’s art and the trade being build up in TC.

Alec tells him stories while they are sitting on the command desk and eat cookies. Reagan tells Alec about the friends that are still working with Jam Pony, tells him how OC and Sketchy deliver messages and do side jobs and how he is okay with it. It earns him a smile, one of the smiles he rarely got before. A genuine one.

It’s starting to become a routine. Those secret meetings. And once Alec admits he is bored out of his head and kind of sick of Max, Reagan starts to feel good about them. Because Alec comes to him, talks to him and not anyone of his other friends or transgenic companions.

They start talking about the way things are running and how some things aren’t really looking good. Alex even tells some things about Manticor when they are slightly drunk on beer and a bottle of Whiskey Alex scored during a trade. When he asks Alec if he is okay, the Transgenic just smirks and says he is always okay. Reagan has the feeling that he has heard that way too often.

Reagan regrets he ever thought of them as freaks. Alec though just laughs and says he is, even if in a different way than Reagan thinks.

The first kiss is a surprise. One Reagan doesn’t think they can talk away with being drunk, because none of them was. Alec smiles, ruefully at first and apologizes even. He looks a little sad and maybe even disappointed. So Reagan just says fuck it to himself and takes the chance.

They kiss a lot after that.

Sometimes Reagan thinks about how surreal everything is, how much he hadn’t anticipated ending up in the situations that redefined his life.

When Alec shows up at his apartment the first time Reagan thinks he shouldn’t be as surprised as he is. Because if he is true to himself he had been waiting for it to happen. But he is surprised and doesn’t do more than a pathetic squeak when Alec shoves him into the bedroom, lips firmly attached to one of the sensual spots on Reagan’s neck.

It is going fast and Reagan can’t bring himself to stop it. He doesn’t want to stop it. Alec is hyped on adrenaline, hyped on the rush of escaping White and telling Max off, hyped on the fact that Reagan isn’t saying no.

The strange thing is that even with the added activities and Alec’s way of appearing and disappearing randomly they establish some kind of routine which goes through the days, weeks and months. It’s a range of different things that come together whenever they meet.
Need, lust, Alec’s boredom and Reagan’s willingness to listen and maybe comply are just a few in the mix.

They never really talk about it, only ever joke. Alec cocky and sure of himself, Reagan with his usually verbal means and snappy attitude. It takes a while before people start to notice , before Reagan starts to notice that he is changing.

OC is the first one to ask if there is someone special in Reagan’s life, Sketchy is the first one to laugh about it and the first one to actually get to know the truth. And the latter only because Alec is too hyped to check if Reagan has guests. Not that he invited Sketchy but he is there for some reason when Alec storms in and kind of mauls Reagan in the middle of his living room.

When he sees Sketchy though he just grins, says Hi and tells him that he misses Jam Pony and the people there and to please tell OC that everything is fine. Sketchy just gapes, then grins, then laughs and finally hugs both of them before he goes.

The first time Alec calls him Reagan has him shutting himself into the bathroom and hyperventilating. The talk that follows was long overdue and is awkward as hell. Reagan thinks he could have gone without it but has to blame himself for freaking out in the first place.

Things are less fine for a while. Alec doesn’t show up as often anymore, speaks less when he is there and Reagan generally feels miserable. The sex is still amazing, Reagan sometimes thinks it’s just that but then Alec will look at him strangely for a second, something flickering in the green depths of his eyes and Reagan isn’t so sure anymore.

It’s when Alec shows up beaten and morose two weeks later when things finally settle into something solid. Reagan actually manages to make Alec talk, through threats which the other man snorts at, through withholding home cooked meals which makes Alec whine for an entire day and finally through just kissing him thoroughly and holding him close.

It turns out that Joshua will be the one Reagan will have to be thankful to for making Alec see what he is missing out on and acting on it. Reagan doesn’t know what he thinks about it. Alec though swears he will never ever start a fight with Joshua again just because he is stupid and horny and desperately wanting to settle things and be close to Reagan. They decide to ignore that rant and start anew.

Reagan doesn’t know how it got there and how Alec is still there all those months later. He never thought he’d be the one Alec won’t be bored with.

“Hey Normal, you coming or what? Food’s getting cold.”

Reagan closes the word file, closes down the whole little computer and decides to never show anybody what he has written down during the last few months. He decides that his life being surreal isn’t all that bad.

Especially not when it has brought him back his golden boy.

“Reagan!”

Even though he sometimes wonders why he has ever thought of the insufferable, impatient, passionate, caring man in his kitchen as a golden boy. He clearly is so much more than that.
